What Is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease in which blood glucose (also called blood sugar) is too high. Blood glucose is our main source of energy and comes from the foods we eat. Insulin helps glucose move from the blood into our cells to use it for energy. When you have diabetes, your body does not make enough insulin or cannot fully use the insulin it makes. Glucose stays in your blood and causes high blood glucose levels.

Our diabetes Disease Management (DM) program can help you understand how to stay healthy with diabetes. The program is open to West Region beneficiaries ages 12–64.
